Dr Marianna Koli joins New College of the Humanities as Convenor ...

New College of the Humanities?(NCH) has today announced that?Dr Marianna Koli?has been appointed Convenor & Senior Lecturer for Economics.

Dr Koli?joins the Economics teaching staff, including Lecturers Jungyoon Lee and?Dr Georgios Zouros, and Visiting Professors?Sir Partha Dasgupta?and?Niall Ferguson, both members of?the College?s Professoriate.

Dr Koli joins the College from the University of Birmingham, where she was a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Economics, lecturing in Development Economics, Statistics and Quantitative Methods. Previously, she spent five years as Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Manchester, where she lectured in Statistics for Development Economists at the postgraduate level.

She was educated at the University of Manchester, where she earned a BSc in International Management, an MSc in Economics with Distinction, and a PhD in Development Policy and Management. She has been heavily involved in student support activities throughout her studies and early career. She has also previously worked for the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Mexico City.

Dr Koli?s research interests focus on applied public policy economics. Her PhD thesis looked at Mexican local political competition and its effect on public finance and poverty. More recently, she has collaborated in a research project on crime rates and sentence length in England and Wales. Her current research combines the economics of Development and Crime, mapping the socio-economic and political determinants of crime in Mexico.

Dr Koli comments, ?I?m excited to be joining the College, and look forward to welcoming the first cohort of students in September. Our vision is one of a stimulating intellectual environment, open to debate and rigorous analysis, and we anticipate a very exciting academic atmosphere.?

Sir?Partha Dasgupta, Professor in Economics, says, ?Studying Economics has never been more significant or timely, with the on-going Eurozone crisis and the fallout of the recession seemingly endless. Economics relates to every aspect of our lives, and it is impossible to understand the world in which we live without knowledge of the subject.

?The small class sizes that the College offers students is a big draw to those looking at studying Economics. There is no chance of one voice getting lost among the many at NCH. A degree in Economics is also an excellent basis for a career, and alongside the College?s Professional Programme, our graduates will be extremely well placed to enter the world of work after three years of studying.?

Professor A C Grayling, Master of?New College?of the Humanities, said: ?It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr Koli to New College of the Humanities. Our students will be challenged throughout their time at NCH to understand the practical application of their studies to the world around them, and Dr Koli?s deep understanding of the impact on society of applied economic policy will provide them with fascinating insights into the subject.?

The?London-based?College?has places available for talented students applying for the Economics BSc or the College?s PPE programme during?clearing?for entry in 2012.?The College?is flexible and assesses each individual?s potential to excel in the curriculum.
