Nissan pulls plug on cycling sponsorship

Latest Headlines

LEON, Spain (VN) ? Nissan is pulling the plug on its high-profile sponsorship effective immediately and its name will not appear on RadioShack jerseys next season.

Officials from the North American division of the carmaker confirmed the news to VeloNews on Thursday. The news first broke earlier today in a report in the Luxembourg newspaper Le Quotidien.

Nissan officials would not elaborate on why it decided to abruptly end its deal with the Luxembourg-registered team owned by construction tycoon Flavio Becca, but confirmed to VeloNews it would no longer be associated with the team.

?Nissan and the management team of RadioShack-Nissan-Trek cycling have reached an agreement that provides for Nissan?s immediate withdrawal as a sponsor of the team, while enabling the team to continue competing in the upcoming 2013 season,? said David P. Reuter, vice president of corporate communications. ?Nissan wishes the riders, team management, and professional cycling well in future endeavors.?

It is believed the car manufacturer will honor its financial agreement through the term of its contract, set to conclude at the end of 2013.

That means that the squad that is home to Andy Schleck, Chris Horner and Fabian Cancellara will still have the money to pay salaries going into next season.

Nissan?s name, however, will not appear on jerseys or bikes and the cars will not be used as official vehicles for the team.

The news is a blow for the team and comes on the heels of troublesome year for the squad after the merger of RadioShack and Leopard-Trek that former team rider Jakob Fulgsang called ?a disaster.?

Former team manager Johan Bruyneel left the team in October under growing pressure for his involvement in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency investigation into doping practices on teams he managed from the late 1990s to 2010.

Bruyneel is challenging a lifetime ban, all but assuring a string of negative headlines if the case hits arbitration next year.

Star rider Fr?nk Schleck is also facing a possible racing ban after testing positive for a banned diuretic at this year?s Tour de France. Luxembourg officials heard more evidence in the case yesterday and sources say a decision could come in January.

Whether those issues helped nudge Nissan out of the sport remains unknown. Company officials refused to expand on reasons behind its hasty exit.

Nissan?s arrival as a full co-sponsor in 2012 was seen as a boon not only for the team, but a larger confirmation for cycling. The team gradually increased its involvement in cycling over the last handful of years, also backing the Amgen Tour of California and USA Pro Challenge.

As one of the world?s largest car manufacturers, Nissan brought high-profile exposure and corporate credibility to the table.

In a press release on Nissan?s website dated February 2012, company officials were enthusiastic about growing the brand?s presence in cycling.

The company cited the two million fans watching the Tour of California and stated that cycling is a ?good fit for a corporation that has consistently demonstrated its interest in environmental issues, along with health and fitness.?

That enthusiasm quickly soured and Nissan is second major sponsor to leave the sport in the past few months.

Rabobank also walked away from its long-running sponsorship of its namesake Dutch team in the wake of the USADA case against former seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong.

Like Nissan, it agreed to pay its financial commitments and the team will ride as ?Blanco? next season while management searches out new backers.

sports news today: jogojitsurma: Free Magazines | Choosing Home ...

Have you stayed in your house for quite a long time now? Are you tired of looking at the same old exterior every time you enter your driveway? If you are then now is the time to think of improving the exterior of your home. This article gives you a brief discussion of five exteriors?exterior paint, vinyl siding, brick covering, stone covering, and stucco finish. Consider one of these coverings for a home improvement project that will surely boost the curb appeal of your home.

Vinyl Siding

Many homeowners prefer an exterior wall covering composed of the same plastic used in water piping (polyvinyl chloride or PVC). Vinyl siding is eye-catching and admired in many new homes and refurbished homes due to the fact that vinyl does not have to be repainted or treated for resistance against weather elements. Although it is thin, vinyl siding provides good insulation in colder climates. You can select numerous finishes and colors for a vinyl siding project and possibly decide to improve the entire home.

Exterior Paint

If the home?s exterior is bare except for concrete, stucco, and paint, or wood or wood-style paneling, it is simple to apply a new layer of paint. If a home has a special effect such as a custom stone, brick, or wood finish or vinyl siding, it would be better to check with a professional before deciding to paint. Some homeowners are willing to pay the extra cost of priming the exterior of the home before applying a new paint color. After a primer is applied, the new color will look more lively and there will be no traces of the previous color of the house. At the local home improvement store, choose from hundreds of colors that a paint professional can custom mix right in the store.

Stone Exterior

Stone contrasts well with other features of the home?s exterior. One option is to put in stone coverings to a few portions of the home while leaving the rest of the exterior intact. For example, some homes include stone cladding along the bottom three feet of the home?s front exterior or ornate stonework around the perimeter of the garage door. Talk with a local masonry company to decide the types of covering that will fit your home improvement budget. Pricing and availability will tell your choices of material. You can be more flexible in the pattern of the stones as long as you don?t have to match an existing stone pattern.

Brick Exterior

While brick is a costly wall covering, its lasts a long time and entails very little maintenance. Occasionally the homeowner will have to to match new brickwork to old brickwork on the property, including the exterior, the driveway, the sidewalks, and the columns supporting the house. Pick a brick finish that complements with other noticeable features of the home?s exterior. If your home has no bricks, you can choose any type of brick pattern.

Stucco

This style of finish is specifically popular in nineteenth century Tudor-style homes in the U.S. and twentieth century homes in Florida. This inexpensive material is made of cement, lime, and sand. You can slap it onto the concrete block exterior or to wallboard covering a wood frame. Stucco is also comparatively simple to apply to the exterior and can be painted easily. An alternative to stucco because of its tendency to crack and shrink in cold climates is the synthetic stucco, made feasible by the development of durable commercial plastics.

The exterior covering of a home is a significant aspect in its curb appeal. When you think of renovating your home, consider the long-term cost of every type of exterior and what will make you happy. Also consider how the exterior will draw potential buyers in case you want to sell your house in the future. Remember, the right home exterior can transform your plain home into a beautiful one !

Perfect Value Engineering (OVE) methods are those design and style and surrounding strategies for wood or ?stick-built? building that were produced by the Do Products Lab in collaboration with the nation?s Association involving Home Building contractors. (Vegan) Holiday Eggnog Smoothie ? Low Fat Vegan Chef Recipes

by Low Fat Vegan Chef Veronica on December 16, 2012

When I was a kid I used to love eggnog. I have no idea why, but I would go crazy for it at Christmas and couldn?t help myself. Now I can?t even imagine drinking that stuff because it?s just so thick and rich and obviously not vegan. ?Last year I tried some vegan eggnog from the health food store, but it was also very thick and rich. My tastes have definitely changed and it just wasn?t my thing!

So this year I decided to make a healthier version, using ripe bananas. If your bananas are really ripe and spotted it will make the perfect drink. Please do not use green/yellow bananas as they are too starchy and not sweet enough or ripe enough to be used in smoothies. The bananas I used for this recipe looked like the one on the right, lots of dark brown speckles.

First I peeled and froze some bananas the night before, and then I left a few ripe ones on the counter to use in smoothies as well.

I find frozen bananas are excellent for adding an ice-creamy like texture to blended drinks, so I highly recommend trying it! They make this eggnog smoothie so delicious I?ve been making them all weekend! It takes a boring old banana smoothie to the next level!

To make this creamy you?ll need some non dairy milk as well too. I used almond milk. To make this a completely raw recipe, you can make your own raw almond milk from my recipe here.

Either way I think you will have a new favorite holiday breakfast or snack recipe! Feel free to impress your family or guests with this one too!

vegan eggnog smoothie shake

Serves 1-2

Ingredients:

1 cup almond milk, or other non dairy milk (unsweetened)
1/8 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
2 ripe bananas, frozen (and broken into pieces if using a regular blender
1 fresh ripe banana
1/4-1/2 tsp ceylon cinnamon (true cinnamon)
dash or two of ?ground nutmeg
dash or two of ground cloves

Directions:

  1. Place ingredients into blender or Vitamix and combine until smooth and creamy. If using a regular blender you may want to let the bananas defrost for a few minutes before blending to make it easier on the blender. Cutting them into smaller pieces helps too.
  2. Garnish with additional cinnamon or nutmeg if desired.
  3. Serve immediately

Additional Tips:

If you don?t have plain cloves or nutmeg you can use a little pumpkin pie spice instead.

What?s your favorite holiday beverage??

CIA rendition case: European court holds Macedonia partly responsible

The decision is important because it suggests that US allies that helped the CIA undertake its secret detention and interrogation program may face liability for their role supporting such operations.

By Warren Richey,?Staff writer / December 13, 2012

In this 2006 file photo, German Khalid el-Masri attends a meeting of the European Parliament committee investigating claims of US secret prisons and flights in Europe at the European Parliament, in Strasbourg, eastern France. The European Court of Human Rights ruled Thursday, Dec. 13, in favor of el-Masri who says the CIA illegally kidnapped him and took him to a secret prison in Afghanistan in 2003.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Thursday that the government of Macedonia was partly responsible for the illegal detention and torture of a German national who was turned over to the CIA?s counterterrorism rendition program and sent to an Afghan prison for interrogation.

The court declared that Macedonia was responsible for alleged abuses suffered in that country by Khaled el-Masri, a German citizen, who was apparently mistaken for a terror suspect with a similar name.

The 17-member court unanimously found that Macedonia violated five articles of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms ? including prohibitions against the use of torture and enforced disappearance.

The court ordered the government to pay Mr. Masri 60,000 euros in compensation.

The decision is important because it suggests that US allies that helped the Central Intelligence Agency undertake its secret detention and interrogation program may face liability for their role supporting such operations.

Macedonia denied any involvement in the Masri rendition. The court rejected the government?s claims, in part citing an affidavit by the Macedonia Interior minister at the time of the detention. ?

Masri?s ordeal began Dec. 31, 2003, when he was detained after arriving on a bus at the Serbia-Macedonia border. Border officials verified his German passport, but the CIA asked that he be detained.

Masri was transported to a hotel in Skopje, where he was held incommunicado for 23 days. He was held by nine armed guards and was repeatedly interrogated. At one point he was told he?d be sent home to Germany in return for admitting his membership in Al Qaeda.

In protest of his treatment, Masri refused to eat for the last 10 days of his confinement in Skopje.

He was turned over to the CIA on Jan. 23, 2004, for a flight to Afghanistan.

Lilly plans another study for Alzheimer's drug

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Eli Lilly and Co. will launch another study of its possible Alzheimer's treatment solanezumab, a move that delays a regulatory decision on a drug that flashed potential to help patients with mild cases of the disease.

The Indianapolis drugmaker's share price slipped Wednesday morning after it announced that it will conduct the additional, late-stage study of solanezumab in mild cases of Alzheimer's. Lilly hasn't determined details of the study but said it will start no later than next year's third quarter.

In August, Lilly said the intravenous treatment failed to slow memory decline in two late-stage studies of about 1,000 patients each. But scientists saw a statistically significant slowing when they combined trial data. Pooled results found 34 percent less mental decline in mild Alzheimer's patients compared with those on a fake treatment for 18 months.

Researchers also saw a statistically significant result when they examined a subgroup of patients with mild cases of Alzheimer's disease.

Doctors and analysts expected Lilly to conduct another study to confirm the drug's benefit before seeking approval. The additional study could provide data that helps Lilly build a better case with U.S. regulators.

But the new study will likely take at least a few years because researchers will have to measure over time a patient's rate of cognitive decline, which involves the ability remember things.

Drugmakers have tried and failed for years to develop successful treatments for the disease, and patients and doctors are anxious for something that can slow its progression.

Solanezumab binds to beta-amyloid protein, which scientists believe is a key component to sticky plaque that basically gums up the brain of a patient with Alzheimer's disease. The drug is designed to help the body remove the protein from the brain before it can form that plaque.

Current treatments like Pfizer Inc.'s Aricept try to control symptoms of the disease. Analysts have said a treatment that does more than manage symptoms such as memory loss, confusion and agitation could be worth billions of dollars in annual sales. But drugmakers first have to spend a massive amount on testing and clinical development to produce such a drug.

"When you go for the blockbuster, you have to pay for the blockbuster, either in money or time," WBB Securities analyst Steve Brozak said regarding Lilly's announcement.

More than 35 million people worldwide have dementia, a term for brain disorders that affect memory, judgment and other mental functions. Alzheimer's is the most common type. Many Alzheimer's patients typically live four to eight years after diagnosis, as the disease gradually erodes their memory and ability to think or perform simple tasks.

In the United States, 5.4 million people have Alzheimer's, which is the country's sixth-leading cause of death. The number of Alzheimer's patients in the U.S. is expected to jump to 16 million by 2050, and costs for care are expected to skyrocket.

Lilly shares fell 3 percent, or $1.54, to $49.06 in morning trading while the Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed slightly. Lilly's stock price was still up more than 15 percent since Lilly announced initial study results in August for solanezumab.

Saints' suspensions tossed out in bounty case

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Finding fault with nearly everyone tied to the New Orleans Saints' bounty case, from the coaches to Roger Goodell, former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue tossed out the suspensions of four players Tuesday and condemned the team for obstructing the investigation.

In a surprising rejection of his successor's overreaching punishments, Tagliabue wrote that he would "now vacate all discipline to be imposed upon" two current Saints, linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith, and two players no longer with the club, Browns linebacker Scott Fujita and free-agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove.

Tagliabue essentially absolved Fujita, but did agree with Goodell's finding that the other three players "engaged in conduct detrimental to the integrity of, and public confidence in, the game of professional football."

It was a ruling that allowed both sides to claim victory more than nine months after the league first made "Saints bounties" a household phrase: The NFL pointed to the determination that Goodell's facts were right; the NFL Players Association issued a statement noting that Tagliabue said "previously issued discipline was inappropriate."

Vilma, suspended by Goodell for the entire current season, and Smith, suspended four games, have been playing for the Saints while their appeals were pending. Fujita is on injured reserve; Hargrove is not with a team.

Tagliabue, appointed by Goodell to oversee a second round of player appeals, criticized the Saints as an organization that fostered bad behavior and tried to impede the investigation into what the NFL said was a performance pool designed to knock targeted opponents out of games from 2009 to 2011, with thousands of dollars in payouts.

A "culture" that promoted tough talk and cash incentives for hits to injure opponents ? one key example was Vilma's offer of $10,000 to any teammate who knocked Brett Favre out of the NFC championship game at the end of the 2009 season ? existed in New Orleans, according to Tagliabue, who also wrote that "Saints' coaches and managers led a deliberate, unprecedented and effective effort to obstruct the NFL's investigation."

The former commissioner did not entirely exonerate the players, however.

He said Vilma and Smith participated in a performance pool that rewarded key plays ? including hard tackles ? while Hargrove, following coaches' orders, helped to cover up the program when interviewed by NFL investigators in 2010.

"My affirmation of Commissioner Goodell's findings could certainly justify the issuance of fines," the ruling said. "However, this entire case has been contaminated by the coaches and others in the Saints' organization."

Tagliabue said he decided, in this particular case, that it was in the best interest of all parties involved to eliminate player punishment because of the enduring acrimony it has caused between the league and the NFL Players Association. He added that he hoped doing so would allow the NFL and union to move forward collaboratively to the more important matters of enhancing player safety.

"To be clear: this case should not be considered a precedent for whether similar behavior in the future merits player suspensions or fines," his ruling said.

Tagliabue oversaw the second round of player appeals to the league in connection with the cash-for-hits program run by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams from 2009-2011. The players initially opposed his appointment.

Goodell had given Vilma a full-season suspension, while he gave Smith, Fujita and Hargrove shorter suspensions.

Tagliabue cleared Fujita of conduct detrimental to the league.

The former commissioner found Goodell's actions historically disproportionate to past punishment to players for similar behavior, which had generally been reserved to fines, not suspensions. He also stated that it was very difficult to determine whether the pledges players made were genuine, or simply a motivational ploy, particularly because Saints defenders never demonstrated a pattern of dirty play on the field.

"The relationship of the discipline for the off-field 'talk' and actual on-field conduct must be carefully calibrated and reasonably apportioned. This is a standard grounded in common sense and fairness," Tagliabue wrote in his 22-page opinion. "If one were to punish certain off-field talk in locker rooms, meeting rooms, hotel rooms or elsewhere without applying a rigorous standard that separated real threats or 'bounties' from rhetoric and exaggeration, it would open a field of inquiry that would lead nowhere."

Saints quarterback Drew Brees commented on Twitter: "Congratulations to our players for having the suspensions vacated. Unfortunately, there are some things that can never be taken back."

The Saints opened the season 0-4 and are now 5-8 and virtually out of the playoffs after appearing the postseason the three previous seasons, including the franchise's only Super Bowl title to conclude the 2009 season.

Shortly before the regular season, the initial suspensions were thrown out by an appeals panel created by the NFL's collective bargaining agreement. Goodell then reissued them, with some changes, and now those have been dismissed.

Now, with the player suspensions overturned, the end could be near for a nearly 10-month dispute over how the NFL handled an investigation that covered three seasons and gathered about 50,000 pages of documents.

"We respect Mr. Tagliabue's decision, which underscores the due process afforded players in NFL disciplinary matters," the league said in a statement.

"The decisions have made clear that the Saints operated a bounty program in violation of league rules for three years, that the program endangered player safety, and that the commissioner has the authority under the (NFL's collective bargaining agreement) to impose discipline for those actions as conduct detrimental to the league. Strong action was taken in this matter to protect player safety and ensure that bounties would be eliminated from football."

The players have challenged the NFL's handling of the entire process in federal court, but U.S District Judge Ginger Berrigan had been waiting for the latest round of appeals to play out before deciding whether to get involved. The judge issued an order Tuesday giving the NFLPA and Vilma until Wednesday to notify the court if they found Tagliabue's ruling acceptable.

Vilma also has filed a defamation lawsuit against Goodell, which also is being handled by Berrigan. Vilma's lawyers, Peter Ginsberg and Duke Williams, said by email to The Associated Press that they would "pursue the defamation action vigorously."

NFL investigators found that Vilma and Smith were ringleaders of a cash-for-hits program that rewarded injurious tackles labeled as "cart-offs" and "knockouts." Witnesses including Williams also said Vilma made a $10,000 pledge for anyone who knocked then-Minnesota quarterback Brett Favre out of the 2010 NFC title game. However, Tagliabue found it was not clear if the pledge was genuine or simply a motivational prop.

"There is more than enough evidence to support Commissioner Goodell's findings that Mr. Vilma offered such a bounty" on Favre, Tagliabue wrote. "I cannot, however, uphold a multi-game suspension where there is no evidence that a player's speech prior to a game was actually a factor causing misconduct on the playing field and that such misconduct was severe enough in itself to warrant a player suspension or a very substantial fine."

The NFL also concluded that Hargrove lied to NFL investigators to help cover up the program. The players have from the beginning denied they ever took the field intending to injure opponents, while Hargrove has said he never lied about a bounty program, because there wasn't one.

Goodell suspended Williams indefinitely, while banning Saints head coach Sean Payton for a full season.

Tagliabue's ruling comes after a new round of hearings that for the first time allowed Vilma's attorneys and the NFLPA, which represents the other three players, to cross-examine key NFL witnesses. Those witnesses included Williams and former Saints assistant Mike Cerullo, who was fired after the 2009 season and whose email to the league, accusing the Saints of being "a dirty organization," jump-started the probe.

"We believe that when a fair due process takes place, a fair outcome is the result," the players' union said in a statement. "We are pleased that Paul Tagliabue, as the appointed hearings officer, agreed with the NFL Players Association that previously issued discipline was inappropriate in the matter of the alleged New Orleans Saints bounty program.

"Vacating all discipline affirms the players' unwavering position that all allegations the League made about their alleged 'intent-to-injure' were utterly and completely false."

Smith said he was pleased that Tagliabue vacated his suspension.

"I continue to maintain that I did not participate in a pay-to-injure program or facilitate any such program," he added. "I appreciate that Mr. Tagliabue did not rush to judgment, taking into consideration all facts presented to him, before ruling ? something that was clearly not done by Commissioner Goodell in previous hearings."

A statement released by Vilma's lawyers on his behalf said the linebacker is "relieved and gratified that Jonathan no longer needs to worry about facing an unjustified suspension.

"On the other hand, Commissioner Tagliabue's rationalization of Commissioner Goodell's actions does nothing to rectify the harm done by the baseless allegations lodged against Jonathan. Jonathan has a right and every intention to pursue proving what really occurred and we look forward to returning to a public forum where the true facts can see the light of day."

Spain arrests woman with cocaine breast implants

MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish police arrested a Panamanian woman on Wednesday who landed in Barcelona from Bogota, Colombia with cocaine stuffed inside her breast implants.

The woman was taken to the police at Barcelona's El Prat airport after her vague answers to questions about the reasons for her trip from Bogota raised suspicion at the border control, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Spanish authorities carry out rigorous checks of passengers arriving on so-called "hot flights" from Latin America, to fight drug smuggling.

When border police discovered fresh scars and blood-stained gauze on the woman's chest she was taken to a nearby hospital to check her claim that she had recently undergone breast implant surgery.

The implants were found to carry 1.38 kg of cocaine.

How to Find the Right Car Loan | Spot The Fox

December 12th, 2012 by admin Leave a reply ?

car insurance 8 How to Find the Right Car LoanWhen you have been searching for a quality vehicle but your loan has been denied for one reason or another, you may begin to believe that all is lost and give up your search for car financing. Well, not all is lost, there are many financing establishments available, that specifically cater to those who have been turned down by others in the past. Many of these places will outright encourage anyone with damaged or poor credit to apply for car financing.

Many establishments will finance you even if you have some incriminating items upon your credit card. Say for example, you are in arrears on your mortgage or perhaps in arrears on your council tax, it is still likely you will find someone to finance a quality and dependable vehicle for you. Many companies specialize in helping people just like you receive financing for a vehicle regardless of things like CCJ?s or payment defaults. Even if you do not have a credit history, these companies will help you get started.

It is extremely difficult for those that are Self-Employed to receive financing for a vehicle. Unless you own a multi-million dollar company it is likely you will have some problems in gaining finance, never fear there are finance companies out there for you as well.

When searching for a finance company that offers financing to those with damaged or no credit there are a few things you should look for. First, make sure the company is reputable and has a solid history of finance; you will want a company that is experienced in their field and has an excellent record. Additionally, you will want a company that has excellent customer service that is both personal and professional. You will want a company in which you can depend on to help you through every aspect of financing the vehicle you want.

Look for a car finance company that can offer you incentives for using their services, for example, cash back or an excellent vehicle trade in program. You should also insure that the company has a wide variety of vehicles to choose from, do not opt for a company that can only offer you a few cars, choose one that can offer you hundreds of vehicles. Make sure that the company inspects each car with a strict plan; this plan should include the car structure, mechanical, as well as electrical aspects.

How to Ensure You Enjoy Your Next Vacation ... - Travel & Leisure ...

Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

We all need vacations from time to time. One mistake many people make when they go on vacation is that they do not properly plan their trip. They don?t consider how much time they have in a day and do not plan things accordingly. You do not want to plan for an exciting adventure when it?s going to take you a few hours just to get there. That is, unless it is something that you are really looking forward to.

This is why we are going to discuss with you a few of the easiest ways you can go about enjoying your next vacation.

Have a Back Up Plan

There are a few ways to go about doing this. First of all, you should pack clothing that is going to ensure you are prepared for any type of weather. Sure, the weatherman may have said it?s going to be sunny all week but you never know. You really don?t want to get caught in a nasty storm and without the proper attire to leave your hotel room. Make sure to at least bring one outfit for each type of weather. This way, you can get out and have fun even if it?s not as nice out as you thought it was going to be. Being stuck in your hotel isn?t exactly how you want to spend your vacation.

Secondly, you should prepare for other changes such as events. What are you going to do if an event you had planned gets cancelled? Always have back up plans in place and other things you want to do or see. This way, you aren?t scrambling at the last minute to find something to do. If there are things you need to book in advance, make sure you do that so that you don?t come up empty handed while at your destination.

You should also come up with things you can do in your hotel if you happen to get sick or just feel like taking some time to relax.

Try Something New

One thing we think everyone should do when they are out of their comfort zone already is to push the limit a little further. One of the best ways to explore a new location is to try a food item you have never tried before. This will definitely be something you are never going to forget. Even if you have to go to a fancy restaurant to try the thing you are interested in; give yourself the luxury and a bit of wiggle room. You work very hard for your money and at the end of the day; if you?re not enjoying your life, what?s the point, right?

Even if you can only afford to do it one night, go to a place you have been dying to check out. Enjoy the scenery and get lost in the vibe. It?s not like you are going to be here often, so take your time and take it all in.

Depression and Chronic Pain Is Extremely Common

In some patients, depression follows the pain, and if you can effectively treat the pain, the depression would get better. And in some patients the depression seems to drive the pain, says Dr. Portenoy. He explains that when these two conditions coexist, patients need carefully coordinated treatment.

GOP set to deliver blow to labor in union-heavy Michigan

President Obama is expected to address right to work laws today, while speaking in Michigan. Mich. State House Democratic Leader -Elect Tim Greimel ?discusses lack of transparency by Gov. Rick Snyder and state legislature in run-up to right-to-work vote, how the bill will hurt unions and wages and the likelihood the bill will pass. Greimel calls the vote "slap in the face to democracy."

By Michael O'Brien, NBC News

?

Updated 7:39 p.m. ? Republicans stand on the cusp of delivering a major blow to organized labor, as they prepare to vote Tuesday on legislation to make Michigan ? a state linked to unions in the public conscious ? a ?right to work? state.

Carlos Osorio / AP

About a dozen members of the Michigan Nurses Association stand on the state Capitol steps in Lansing, Mich., Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, protesting right-to-work legislation.

State lawmakers are expected to approve legislation barring rules in workplaces that make union membership a condition of employment. The offensive would mark the culmination of efforts by Midwestern Republican governors to curb labor rights in the heart of industrial America, where unions once loomed large.

President Barack Obama led Democrats on Monday in a counteroffensive, hoping to stymie Republicans in control of Michigan?s House and Senate, who could act as soon as Tuesday to approve right to work legislation after approving initial versions of the proposed law last week.

Related:?Obama decries right-to-work proposal during trip to Michigan

?These so-called right to work laws, they don't have anything to do with economics. They have everything to do with politics,? Obama said in Redford, Mich., where he had planned to travel well before the labor fight erupted last week. "What they're really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money."

But Republicans maintain commanding majorities in Lansing. And Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has said he would sign the legislation if it reached his desk. With that, he would become the latest Republican governor to be elected in 2010 in a Midwestern state to advance legislation meant to curb labor rights. A familiar battle, which played out with such intensity in other states over the last two years, has now found a new epicenter in Michigan.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker memorably pushed legislation through his statehouse that stripped public employee unions of their collective bargaining rights; his initiative prompted a recall election, which the Republican survived in June. Ohio Gov. John Kasich?s similar effort to curb bargaining rights was only halted when voters reversed such a law through a ballot initiative.

But Michigan Republicans might now succeed in passing a right to work law, a favorite proposal of conservatives that isn?t even on the books in Wisconsin or Ohio. Snyder, who had previously said that seeking such a law wasn?t on his agenda, may now preside over one of the most striking symbolic blows to organized labor in some time.

President Obama tells an enthusiastic crowd his plan to raise taxes on the wealthy at the Daimler diesel plant in Detroit. Watch the entire speech.

?I think he's defaulting on his responsibilities,? Michigan Democratic Rep. Sander Levin told NBC News on Monday. ?It's a cave to the radical right.?

Levin was among the group of lawmakers who met on Monday with Snyder to plead with him to veto the legislation, or at least delay a vote in the state legislature. Absent that, Levin said Democrats want Republicans to change their proposal to allow for voters to repeal the law through a ballot initiative, as voters did in Ohio. The Michigan law is coupled with an appropriations bill that would exempt it from a popular vote challenge.

Related:?Dems launch blitz to halt 'right to work' law in Michigan

?I would have a very difficult time seeing that get changed,? said state Rep. Marty Knollenberg, the chief sponsor of the law in the state House. He contended that the appropriation provision is necessary to help implement the law.

In short, opponents of the Michigan proposal would have little recourse available to challenge the law in the immediate future, making its impact on a union-heavy state like Michigan even more pronounced.

?I think the Republican strategy in doing this so quickly is that they don?t want what Wisconsin had, dragging on for so many days,? said Bill Ballenger, the editor of the influential ?Inside Michigan Politics? newsletter. ?This is a blitzkrieg, and Republicans hope it?s going to be over and done with tomorrow.

While Republicans in the Michigan Capitol had long pined to advance this law, it languished until after the election. In November, the state?s voters rejected an amendment that would have added a right to collective bargaining to the Michigan state constitution. Amid rumblings that the GOP leadership would resurrect the proposal, it was brought to a vote in the state House and state Senate before organized labor and Democrats were effectively able to mobilize.

Democrats have now turned their attention toward Snyder, who had styled himself as a kind of pragmatic Republican who avoided the ideological trench warfare of his fellow partisans, in halting the law. ?According to congressional Democrats, during a meeting with Snyder the governor said he took their concerns ?seriously,? though they?re less optimistic privately that he?ll reverse course.

Organized labor groups are organizing a ?day of action? on Tuesday in Lansing, including a march to the state capitol that will likely invoke memories of the tens of thousands of activists who flooded the state house in Madison, Wis., during the height of Walker?s legislative battle in 2011.

But Knollenberg said he ?can?t think of anything? that would prompt him to back off the legislation. Moreover, Knollenberg suggested it?s state Republican lawmakers ? rather than Snyder ? who are driving the effort.?

Former Michigan Republican Governor John Engler, who is the president of the business roundtable, joins The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd to talk about President Barack Obama's trip the Michigan, the fiscal cliff, and Michigan's 'right to work' law.

?It certainly started from the legislature, and then it was presented to the governor,? he said.

?It wasn?t on his priority list, as he indicated,? Knollenberg said of Snyder. But once Republicans had gathered adequate support for the proposal, Snyder ?adapted his beliefs and saw that this was a real opportunity to put Michigan on the map in terms of creating jobs.?

And as the law?s passage seems more like a fait accompli, Snyder, if nothing else, will join the ranks of Walker and Kasich. All three will be seriously targeted by Democrats and organized labor in 2014, offering a chance for voters to render their verdict on this trio of Republican antagonists.

For their part, Democrats warn that the toxic partisanship that took hold in Wisconsin and Ohio would now spread to Michigan.

?Instead of Michigan united, it becomes Michigan divided,? Levin said. ?We?ve gone from a bipartisan effort to deepening partisanship.?

Alternatively, it could enshrine Snyder ? a former business executive who postured himself as ?one tough nerd? during his 2010 campaign ? as a darling of conservatives who wish to further put unions on the defensive.

?For the state, I think it's absolutely monumental,? said Stu Sandler, a Republican consultant in Michigan. ?It's the most significant piece of legislation in decades, and sends a very strong signal about the direction the state is heading.?

Warned one senior labor official, "If this bill is signed, it's going to be Thunderdome between now and 2014."

Knollenberg argued his legislation is only about providing opportunity to the state?s workers.

?I just hope that at the end of the day ? the unions will then have to sell their story as to why they?re benefiting the workers,? he said. ?I believe that if they can demonstrate their value to their workers, they?ll do fine. But they?re going to have to work for it.?

Update: Not all hope was lost for supporters of organized labor, who believe they would be able to use a citizens initiative under Michigan law to eventually challenge the right-to-work law. Under such a scenario, if labor supporters could gather a higher number of signatories to a petition, they could force a vote to undo the law in 2014. However, the new right-to-work law would be allowed to take effect in the meanwhile.

Iraq officials say bombing kills 3

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi authorities say a bomb exploded near the house of an anti-al-Qaida militiaman south of Baghdad, killing him, his 8-year-old son and another family member.

A police officer said that the blast hit early Sunday in the town of Iskandariyah, 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Baghdad. The Sunni fighter's wife and two daughters were also wounded.

A medic in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Since the height of Iraq's insurgency in 2006-2008, Sunni Arabs who joined forces with the U.S. military to fight al-Qaida have been favorite targets for Sunni militants who consider them traitors.

(AP) ? France's interior minister says there was a "kind of racism" behind the bombings of several vacation homes on the French island of Corsica but stopped short of saying nationalist groups were responsible.

Officials have said that the homes targeted were mostly second residences, which often belong to mainland French. Manuel Valls called on Corsican politicians to more firmly condemn the attacks, saying there was no difference between Corsica and France.

While Corsica is wholly French, it has significant autonomy and maintains a distinct language and culture. Homegrown nationalists have long resented the influx of "continentals" each summer.

Corsica is also home to criminal gangs, which have carried a campaign of killings this year.

Valls vowed in a television interview Sunday that the government would fight both Mafioso and nationalist violence.
