Moderate doses of alcohol increase social bonding in groups

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? A new study led by University of Pittsburgh researchers reveals that moderate amounts of alcohol -- consumed in a social setting -- can enhance positive emotions and social bonding and relieve negative emotions among those drinking.

While it is usually taken for granted that people drink to reduce stress and enhance positive feelings, many studies have shown that alcohol consumption has an opposite effect. In a new paper titled "Alcohol and Group Formation: A Multimodal Investigation of the Effects of Alcohol on Emotion and Social Bonding," research shows that moderate doses of alcohol have a powerful effect on both male and female social drinkers when they are in a group.

The paper is published online in Psychological Science.

According to the researchers, previous alcohol studies testing the impact of alcohol on emotions involved social drinkers consuming alcohol in isolation rather than in groups.

"Those studies may have failed to create realistic conditions for studying this highly social drug," said Michael A. Sayette, lead author and professor of psychology in Pitt's Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. "We felt that many of the most significant effects of alcohol would more likely be revealed in an experiment using a social setting."

Sayette and his colleagues assembled various small groups using 720 male and female participants, a larger sample than in previous alcohol studies. Researchers assessed individual and group interactions using the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and the Grouptalk model for speech behavior.

They concluded that alcohol stimulates social bonding, increases the amount of time people spend talking to one another, and reduces displays of negative emotions. According to Sayette, the paper introduces into the alcohol literature new measures of facial expression and speech behavior that offer a sensitive and comprehensive assessment of social bonding.

Sayette and eight colleagues took special care in the methods they employed to form the groups. Each participant was randomly assigned to a group of three unacquainted "strangers." Each group was instructed to drink an alcoholic beverage, a placebo, or a nonalcoholic control beverage. Twenty groups representing each gender composition (three males; one female and two males; two males and one female; and three females) were assigned to the three different beverage scenarios. Group members sat around a circular table and consumed three drinks over a 36-minute time span. Each session was video recorded, and the duration and sequence of the participants' facial and speech behaviors were systematically coded frame by frame.

Results showed that alcohol not only increased the frequency of "true" smiles, but also enhanced the coordination of these smiles. In other words, alcohol enhanced the likelihood of "golden moments," with groups provided alcohol being more likely than those offered nonalcoholic beverages to have all three group members smile simultaneously. Participants in alcohol-drinking groups also likely reported greater social bonding than did the nonalcohol-drinking groups and were more likely to have all three members stay involved in the discussion.

"By demonstrating the sensitivity of our group formation paradigm for studying the rewarding effects of alcohol," said Sayette, "we can begin to ask questions of great interest to alcohol researchers -- Why does alcohol make us feel better in group settings? Is there evidence to suggest a particular participant may be vulnerable to developing a problem with alcohol?"

The new research sets the stage for evaluation of potential associations between socioemotional responses to alcohol and individual differences in personality, family history of alcoholism, and genetic vulnerability.

Additional Pitt researchers on the project were Pitt graduate students in psychology Kasey Creswell, John Dimoff, and Catharine Fairbairn and professors of psychology Jeffrey Cohn, John Levine, and Richard Moreland. Other researchers included Bryan Heckman, a graduate student in psychology at the University of South Florida, and Thomas Kirchner, a research investigator at the Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies.

The study was funded by a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

University of Utah Purchases 40-Foot Electric Bus from BYD

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The University of Utah has placed an order for a 40-foot, all-electric transit bus with BYD Company Limited (BYD) the largest manufacture of all-electric buses in the world.

?We will be the model of zero emissions rapid transit for the Nation?

BYD?s long-range, all-electric, ?GreenCity? buses (click for video) have been running worldwide in commercial fleet service for the last two years. BYD?s GreenCity fleets (which include both eTaxi?s and eBUSes) have accumulated over 14 million miles (or 23 million Km) using BYD?s internally developed electric drive technologies and Iron-Phosphate battery systems. BYD will supply one all-electric GreenCity bus to be retrofitted with WAVE?s wireless charging pad under the bus, developed by the Utah State University Energy Dynamics Laboratory, one of the leaders in wireless power transfer for vehicles. This technology will allow the BYD electric buses to pull up over an embedded charger in the asphalt with a maximum of 10 inches clearance and ?opportunity charge? the waiting bus with no moving parts or unsightly wires required. The funds to test a full in-service operation of WAVE?s wireless power charging system were provided through a Federal Transit Administration grant awarded to the Utah Transit Authority.

The new BYD 40-foot GreenCity electric bus will be the first shuttle to be allowed to run across the heart of campus ? a 1.7 mile loop route between the South Campus TRAX station north to the Warnock Engineering building with midway stops at the Student Union buildings. The bus runs will be timed to pick up passengers coming off eastbound trains on a 15-minute cycle. The driver will position the bus over the charging pad during several minute wait periods between runs. The embedded charge pads measure about three feet square and pose no danger to the public. Nothing protrudes above the surface to be damaged by cars, snow plows or vandals. At the core of the BYD?s GreenCity bus technology are BYD?s Iron Phosphate batteries. The BYD battery boasts the highest safety, longest service life and most environmentally friendly of all rechargeable chemistries.

"We will be the model of zero emissions rapid transit for the Nation," said Alma Allred, the University of Utah?s Director of Commuter services. "We want to be in the forefront of technology that reduces the need for fossil fuels and has zero noise and zero pollution."

"Our electric GreenCity bus has proven that it not only significantly reduces pollution in large cities, but it has also reduced operating expenses versus Natural-Gas and Diesel buses by up to 70% -- there are no internal-combustion engines to maintain and service?no engines to rebuild over the life of the vehicles?, stated Micheal Austin, Vice President of BYD America. ?BYD is proud to be a part of this wireless power transfer project with WAVE ,the University of Utah and the Utah Transit Authority ? we applaud their visionary leadership.?

Politician Plays "Pick Out the Immigrant" with Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez

Are you ready, THG readers, to play everyone's favorite new game: Pick Out the Immigrant... starring Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez!

With most of the political world reacting today to the Supreme Court upholding Barack Obama's healthcare plan, it's worth also noting that Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-IL) took the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday and expressed his disdain for the Arizona immigration policy that, essentially, allows police offers to ask for the identification of any resident, merely based on his/her appearance.

"In Arizona today, all that stands between you and a legal nightmare is whether a police officer feels there is a reasonable suspicion to inquire about your country of origin. Yet, Arizona politicians will tell you with a straight face no less, that they can apply this law without using racial profiling."

Gutierrez then aimed to prove these folks wrong by posting several images of celebrities and asking Congressmen to determine which is the immigrant. Watch for yourself:

"The point is simple," Gutierrez concludes. "The idea that any government official can determine who belongs in America and who doesn't simply by looking at them is completely ridiculous, unfair and un-American ... and yet this absurdity is the law of Arizona."

Sanctions put the squeeze on Iranians

Leila is getting pretty good at playing Angry Birds on her imported iPhone. Sitting behind her desk in an idle travel agency in central Tehran, she often has nothing better to do these days.

"As you can see, business isn't so good," she says, gesturing at the drab, empty office.

"Last summer, I was constantly on the phone arguing with customers why there were no last-minute tickets available. Now, on a good day -- if we're lucky -- we might barely get to sell to capacity on a flight."

Leila is a 26-year-old with a mechanical engineering degree who is overqualified for her job. Like other Iranians interviewed for this story, she declined to give her last name.

She is one of a legion of young Tehranis whose struggle to stay in Iran's middle class is becoming increasingly more difficult because of the country's economic straits made much worse by EU and US sanctions.

Travel is one of the first luxuries the middle class is sacrificing.

"It's the price of the dollar. A lot of people can't afford to travel as frequently," Leila says, explaining that tour prices have doubled since a year ago and the number of travellers has fallen to a third.

Iran has been losing ground in its constant battle to keep a lid on inflation after its currency, the rial, lost more than half of its value against the dollar over the past year, a slide accelerated in the first few days of 2012 after the sanctions were announced.

Iranians travelling abroad often have no access to internationally accepted credit cards because of sanctions restricting financial transactions.

Instead, they have to take dollars in cash -- and are restricted to some 1,000 dollars a year at the official bank rate of 12,260 rials to the dollar, instead of the much pricier 20,000 rials found with street money-changers.

Many Iranians are divided between blaming the West or their own government's economic policies for their predicament.

A 2010 decision by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to scrap subsidies for fuel and other basic needs, tempered by cash hand-outs to most of the population, is pointed to by some as a key driver of inflation, officially at 20 percent but put by independent analysts at much higher.

Ardeshir, a 60-something former artillery officer in the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, says "the world powers are bullying us" over Iran's nuclear programme, which is generally supported by the population.

But the veteran, who now makes ends meet by driving a scuffed Kia for a private taxi service, also has some criticism for the provocation Ahmadinejad frequently lobs at the West and Israel.

"Since Mr Ahmadinejad started that fiasco about the Holocaust -- saying it didn't exist, that it was a myth -- he gave them a convenient excuse," he says as he inches forward in the city's brutally dense traffic.

The United States and its Western allies "now say Iran wants to build a bomb and use it to destroy Israel," he says, deliberately moving his knee injured in the war. "It's a dilemma really. I despise bullies, but I don't know if I should be angry with the statesmen pulling the strings or not.

"Now, I have to work for 12, sometimes 15, hours a day if I want to continue to pay for my daughter's university fees," he says angrily.

Manijeh, a 43-year-old housewife in an obligatory long coat and Islamic headscarf, spreads three big, hot-out-of-the-oven pieces of bread to cool on a wooden board outside a traditional bakery.

"The bread is more expensive, cheese is more expensive, and so is milk," she complains.

"It is because of the sanctions," she states decisively.

"I have to cut on expenses that now seem, well, luxurious," she says. "We used to have (the imported chocolate and hazelnut spread) Nutella present at breakfast every morning. My six-year-old daughter loves it. But now I buy it only once a month."

As the cost of even staples weighs ever more heavily, complaints are rising to the ears of Iran's politicians, where they fuel factional in-fighting.

Parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani, a vocal critic of Ahmadinejad, said this month the rising prices were causing "psychological problems" for society.

"If a sound plan existed, the situation of our economy would be different, considering the resources in our country," he said.

Iran's reliance on its oil exports to fund its economy is taking a blow this week, with US sanctions punishing foreign companies doing business with Iran's central bank unless exemptions are granted, and an EU embargo on Iranian crude.

The measures will tighten an already draconian sanctions regime drawn up by the UN Security Council and Western governments that is aimed at persuading Tehran to abandon the most sensitive part of its nuclear programme: uranium enrichment.

Tehran, which insists its nuclear programme is exclusively peaceful, insists it will forge ahead with its atomic activities with even more determination, to show that the sanctions are pointless as a tool of leverage.

But despite repeated assertions by Iranian officials that sanctions are bound to fail, central bank chief Mahmoud Bahmani admitted Friday the rial devaluation was affected by the punitive measures, the ISNA news agency reported.

'Magic Mike' Stars Avoided 'Iconic' Stripper Outfits

'When I actually danced, I did a Boy Scout outfit, and I thought it was the lamest thing ever,' Channing Tatum tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

Channing Tatum in "Magic Mike"
Photo:

If you're not yet familiar with the year's sexiest movie about male strippers, "Magic Mike," then you've been deliberately avoiding the very fun subject. The R-rated film is loosely based on star Channing Tatum's stripper past, directed by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh, and features a very attractive ensemble cast. When MTV News caught up with Tatum and co-star Matthew McConaughey recently, we asked them to reveal which parts of their characters' stripper attire proved most cumbersome during filming.

"You were always in comfy, comfy stuff," McConaughey pointed out about Tatum's wardrobe.

"Yeah, but that was sort of my own thing when I actually did it, because when I actually danced, I did a Boy Scout outfit, and I thought it was the lamest thing ever," Tatum recalled. "And I did a clown thing. But my favorite thing I did [was a dance to an] Usher [song], and I was just like, 'No I'm going to pick the song that I like. I'm going to dress like the song should be dressed for,' and that was it. I wanted to be normal; I didn't want to do the kinda iconic stripper things."

"It's a great wardrobe, isn't it?" McConaughey continued, speaking of the cast's various glittery outfits, thongs and tight booty shorts. "I loved getting the wardrobe together."

"The tassels were my favorite," Tatum said of a specific detail on one of McConaughey's thongs.

"The tassels, yes a lot of talk, but a lot of work, a lot of hours went into the tassels on Dallas' thong," he recalled with a smile. "The length of the tassel, the thickness of the tassel, what does it reveal, what does it not."

"It had to be perfect," Tatum said.

All this happy talk about their tiny outfits prompted us to ask whether they kept any of the creative costumes.

"I kept all of my stuff," McConaughey said without missing a beat.

"All of it," Tatum agreed. "Come on, we've got wives now."

Check out everything we've got on "Magic Mike."

Writing Articles in Nonnative Language

What would be the most difficult part in learning a nonnative language? Is it fluency in speaking? It is difficult for a nonnative to keep up with native speed of speaking. It is not easy to catch the contents of conversations in native pronunciation. How about writing? Are you confident in writing in the appropriate language with correct composition? As one's language study progresses, the difficulty changes. As a nonnative writer and speaker of English, I always had a problem in writing.

You can speak as you wish. Even if you make a mistake, it is okay as long as you could make yourself understood. Writing is different. Your mistakes would stay there and keep you embarrassed on the mistakes you made. I did not like writing because of this reason. I did not like reading whatever I wrote in English, because it would embarrass me later. I did not like even proofreading my own writing, because either the contents or the English would bother me.

However, I discovered that writing is the most effective way to push up your language level to a higher stage. Native speakers would not correct your English in a conversation, as long as they understood you. You might end up making same mistakes for a long time without being corrected. Instead, you can ask your native friends or colleagues to proofread your English. Thus, you could clearly know the mistakes you made. You would be given an opportunity to correct the mistakes you made, possibly forever.

You would not be able to brush up your language skills without trying. Many people are afraid of trying because they are afraid of failing. You need to go over this barrier, first. It would help if you expected to fail. Failing is one of the learning processes. Therefore, you do not have to be afraid of or embarrassed by failing. It is natural. It is not only you who makes a mistake. Everybody does.

I describe the sequence as follows:

T: Trial

F: Failure

C: Challenge (Continue Trying)

P: Progress (Make Progress)

Blogs are popular these days. I do not recommend blogs for language improvement. Nobody will comment on your language in your blog. It is rude. Nobody will comment on your language.

I recommend using article writing and submitting sites, such as "EzineArticles.com". What is the most important part is that they have an approval process. Your articles could be approved and posted or rejected and sent back for corrections. Thus the author must be serious to use proper English to have their articles approved. There are some websites, which help you to correct your language with reasonable cost.

If you try this way of writing articles in your nonnative language, you would find later that it is not only your writing ability which improves. Your speaking, reading, or even listening capability would be improved, because you are improving your language ability as a whole, in this way.

I hope you?find them useful.

30 Free Ways To Market Your Small Business Site

By -?Carrie Hill

Are you looking for ways to market your small business website with a limited budget?
?
Whether it?s with established sites such as Google and Facebook, or newer outlets like Pinterest, there are plenty of options available to promote your site.
?
There are at least 30 ways to market your website with a time investment and no credit card required. Some of these are oldies but goodies, while others are newer and exciting avenues you may not have tried out yet.
?
Here are 30 things you can do today to get started marketing your website for free.
?1. Press releases still work. Granted a submission to PRWeb or a Vocus account make the pickup and link benefit much easier, but those cost dollars ? so for this article lets reiterate the best free press release sources: ?24-7PressRelease.com
??PRLog.org
??IdeaMarketers.com
?
2. Send the press release to your local media outlets, or any niche media outlets that may be interested in what you do.

?3. Claim, verify, and update your Google Local Business listing. This is extremely important. Google Local Listings have been absorbed into Google+, so be sure to check out this great resource over at Blumenthals.com to keep up to date on how to manage your Google Local Listing.

?4.?Find a niche social media site that pertains to your exact business and participate. Be helpful, provide relevant and useful information, and your word of mouth advertising will grow from that engagement. ?Examples: ?Travel or hospitality business ? Tripadvisor.com forums
??Photography store ? Photo.net or RockTheShotForum.com
??Wedding Planning or Favor site ? Brides.com or Onewed.com forums
??Search your niche or service plus forums to find ideas. If there isn?t a forum out there, consider starting one.
?

5. Build a Google+ page for your business and follow businesses that are related to your product or service niche. Share informative and relative content and link to your profile from your website. You should also consider allowing users to +1 your content on a page by page basis.
?

?6. Setting up joint benefit with local businesses or others in your niche can help you reach eyes you never did before. Be sure to answer the question "Will my user find this information beneficial as they shop and purchase?" every time you link to a resource, or request a link or listing on another site.
?

?7. Comment and offer original, well thought out, sensible information, opinion and help on blogs that are relevant to your website's topic and be sure to leave your URL. Even if a nofollow tag is attached, you could gain a bit of traffic and some credibility as an authority on the subject matter. This is not blog comment spamming, this is engaging in a conversation relevant to your website's topic.
?

?8. Set up and verify a Webmaster Central Account at Google.
?

?9.?Set up a Bing Webmaster Tools account and verify it.

?10. Update or create your XML sitemap and upload it to Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools.
?

?11.?Write a "how-to" article that addresses your niche for Wikihow.com or Answers.com. This is kind of fun and a good resource for getting mentions and links. Looking at your product or service in a step-by-step manner is often enlightening in several ways. It can help you better explain your products and services on your own website. I will say I don?t know why some of these sites still rank well, many of them are junk. I do like most of the answers on the two sites mentioned above. Be picky with where you participate.

?12. Write unique HTML page titles for all of your pages. This is still extremely important, don?t skimp on this one.
?

?13. Share your photo

s at Flickr ? get a profile, write descriptions, and link to your website. Don't share photos you don't own or have permission to use.

?14. Start a blog. There's nothing wrong with getting the basics of blogging down by using a free service from Blogger or WordPress.
?

?15. Make sure your Bing and Yahoo Local listings are up to date.
?

?16.?Update and optimize your description and URL at YP.com. They'll try to get you to spend money on an upgraded listing or some other search marketing options. Don't bother with that, but make sure the information is accurate and fresh.
?

?17.?Use your Bing Webmaster Tools account to look at your incoming links. How do they look? Are all of the sites relevant and on-topic? If not, reevaluate your link building practices and start contacting any of the irrelevant sites you can and ask them to take down your link. A clean and relevant incoming link profile is important; cleaning up bad links is a necessity until we can tell Google and Bing which links we want them to ignore.
?

?18.?Make a slideshow of your products or record an original how-to video and upload to YouTube. Be sure to optimize your title and descriptions. Once it's uploaded, write a new page and embed the video on your own Web site. Add a transcription of the video if possible.
?

?19. Try a new free keyword tool for researching website optimization, then see #20.

?20.?Add a page to your site focused on a top keyword phrase you found in #19.

?21.?Build a Facebook Page and work to engage those that are interested in your product or service. Facebook is so much more robust than it ever was! Create groups, events, and photo albums. Link to your Facebook profile from your site and allow visitors to your site to like and share your content.

?22. Install Google Analytics if you don?t have any tracking software. The program is pretty amazing and it's free. You need to do this if you haven?t already. It's that important.
?

?23.?Start Twittering or start doing it much better than you are now ? it's a great way to network with like-minded individuals.

?24.?Pinterest is hot right now. If you have visually stimulating content that is relevant to the site's demographic, you can find great success right now. Be sure you're using solid practices for marketing on Pinterest as you get started.

?25.?Create a new list in Twitter and follow profiles of industry experts you know and trust. Use this as your modern feed reader. I don?t use RSS feed readers anymore. I like content that has been vetted by my peers and is worthy of a tweet or two.

?26.?Try a new way to write an ad for a struggling PPC ad group or campaign.
?

Children's Health & Fitness ? What Causes Childhood Obesity ...

June 26th, 2012 by Len Saunders

As many of my regular viewers to this web blog know, there are many factors contributing to childhood obesity. I post daily here about it, whether news print articles, opinions, feedback, or just personal opinion.

Recently, I wrote an article for Yahoo! (click here) about childhood obesity. I started searching for sources for this article, and received over 100 responses to the question, ?What do you think caused the rise in childhood obesity?? Responses came from professional and Olympic athletes, fitness experts, health experts, nutritionist, and parents.

I was unable to use everyone?s feedback, but thought it would be great to post some of their responses on my blog in a new web series, ?What Causes Childhood Obesity.? I hope that you enjoy the opinions here from various individuals. Please remember, my including their posts does not necessarily mean I agree or endorse their opinion, rather, a place to share other people?s thoughts.

Keeping Kids Fit

Opinion: Warren Martin

Childhood obesity is on the rise because of more than one issue.

To start every time this topic is brought up for discussion the talk is so one dimensional. Just as it is with the subject of adult obesity. For example the sugar debate! Fixing a complex situation takes understanding all components.

List of some main reasons:

1) The mis-education about the foundation (law of thermodynamics) of what really causes fat loss (energy deficit) and fat gain (energy surplus). It becomes a waste of time when misconceptions lead the train of thought in trying to fix an issue of reality.

2) The misconceptions on what is thought to be right is so ingrained into mainstream society that now these thoughts and methods are being taught to our youth and in essence is becoming part of tradition.

3) Parents are more concerned with their kids being HAPPY instead of teaching boundaries, control, and healthy habits. *This is what makes them HAPPY down the road because they don?t get weight related diseases or picked on for being overweight.

4) Society and Technology!! Schools decreasing activities, kid can?t go outside as much, videos games, etc, etc, etc! Well these are actual things that could contribute but don?t act like there are not options to counter act this. How bout boys and girl club, Sports, Wii fit, biking with your kid, telling your kid that he or she can?t eat that huge candy bar, and the list goes on.

In conclusion to solve this epidemic we mist teach the right education and limit money or rating driven info, parents and adults get responsible, and quit blaming entities that really would never fix the problem alone. COMMONSENSE!

Boingo brings free WiFi to six Manhattan subway stations, lets you tweet the heat

Boingo has surely overestimated New York City's desire to "soa[k] up the warm weather" this summer, but when it comes to complaining about the heat, no one does it like the Big Apple. And now, thanks to the hotspot provider (with some promotional help from the folks at Google Offers), Manhattanites will be able to do just that all over Twitter from the convenience of a handful of subway stations on 14th and 23rd street. The promotion begins today and runs through September 7th. Including the hashtag #FreeNYCWiFi puts you in the running for Boingo rewards. We also recommend #wheresthatdamnEtrain, which will surely be trending for the next few months. For a full list of stations, check out the source link below.

McAfee: Sneaky Teens Surf On PCs More Than Mobile, Facebook Rules Over All Other Social Networks

teen computerGoing mobile may be the mantra for a lot of tech companies these days, but if they're in the business of targeting teenagers with their services, perhaps they should think twice: over 37 percent of teens use laptops, and a further 30 percent rely on desktop machines to surf online and engage with digital content, but only 13.5 percent use smartphones and only five percent use tablets, according to a new study out today from Intel-owned security specialists McAfee. The study, covering online activity among U.S. teens, also reveals a pretty massive disconnect between parents and their kids when it comes to how the latter is using the internet -- with some big security implications within that -- and the revelation that teens are not actually that rebellious compared to their adult counterparts when it comes to engaging with social media, in many cases using the same sites their parents do to communicate with each other.

Lebanon to take part in regional energy forum in Cyprus next week

BEIRUT: Lebanon will be one of the main participants in a major regional energy forum in Cyprus next week with a special emphasis on oil and gas exploration in the Middle East.

Energy and Water Minister Gebran Bassil will be one of the key speakers in the event to be held at Cyprus University on June 26.

Lebanon will start its first bidding round for offshore oil and natural gas exploration licenses this year after approving regulatory laws in January.

Meanwhile, Cyprus is expected to offer a second licensing round on some 12 offshore fields. Critics have suggested that Lebanon has been slow off the mark in becoming a regional player, let alone actually bidding for involvement.

Information company Gulf Intelligence, organizer of the Levant Energy Forum 2012, noted that an estimated 122 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered, recoverable natural gas are in the Levant Basin Province in the eastern Mediterranean region, which includes the coastal areas off Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon and Syria.

?The Levant Basin also holds an estimated 1.7 billion barrels of undiscovered, recoverable oil. Noble Energy Inc. reported in December that it had made another natural gas discovery near Cyprus, building on a string of successes in the eastern Mediterranean. The oil-and-gas explorer and its partners have now made five discoveries in the greater Levant basin,? Gulf Intelligence said in a statement.

?The gas finds are estimated at 33 trillion cubic feet. The newest well offshore [from] Cyprus was drilled at a water depth of about 1.6 km, and about 5.5 km into the ocean floor. Noble said it could yield up to 8 trillion cubic feet of gas,? it added.

Noble, which is based in Houston, operates the well with a 70 percent working interest, and Delek Drilling LP and Avner Oil Exploration LP will each have 15 percent, subject to final approval by the government of Cyprus.

Cyprus? President Demetris Christofias will be keynoting at the forum in addition to the country?s Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis

Moderating the event is Sean Evers, managing partner of Gulf Intelligence. Evers is a former correspondent for the Financial Times and Bloomberg, and founded Gulf Intelligence in 2009. The Dubai-based strategic communications and public affairs consultancy produces industry forums and roundtable discussion sessions globally.

Also speaking is Roudi Baroudi, the secretary-general World Energy Council Lebanon, leading energy expert and the CEO of Qatari-based Energy & Environment Holding.

Forum industry partners include Noble Energy, an independent energy company with a diverse portfolio of assets and a presence in 11 countries; Premier Oil plc, a FTSE 250 independent exploration and production company with interests in the North Sea, South East Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Pakistan regions; and Norman Broadbent, the U.K.-based consulting executive search firm.

The event is hosted by the University of Cyprus, which boasts six faculties and 21 departments offering a wide range of study programs.

According to energy experts, the thus-far untapped Levantine Basin is potentially comparable to other major reserves around the world.

(AP) ? Cody Ross hit two homers and drove in five runs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 9-4 Sunday in a game that likely was Kevin Youkilis' farewell to the Fenway Park fans.

Youkilis, a subject of recent trade rumors, was lifted for a pinch-runner after hitting a triple in the seventh inning. After the game, manager Bobby Valentine said general manager Ben Cherington told him "there is a situation brewing" before Youkilis' at-bat.

Youkilis was greeted with a hug from Nick Punto, who pinch-ran for him, and many of his teammates on the top step of the dugout.

The burley infielder, in his ninth season with the Red Sox, took his helmet off and waved to the crowd, blew a kiss and was urged to come out for a curtain call by his teammates before heading down the steps. He was given a lengthy standing ovation and the fans chanted "Yook."

The nameplate above Youkilis' locker was gone in the clubhouse after the Red Sox's the ninth win in 11 games. Boston completed interleague play with a winning record for the eighth straight season (11-7).

Jason Heyward continued his torrid June for the Braves, hitting a solo homer among his three hits.

Atlanta, which lost for the ninth time in 13 games, closed interleague play 8-10.

Aaron Cook (1-1), making just his second start with the Red Sox and first since going on the disabled list May 6 after sustaining a cut on his left knee covering home plate, gave up three runs ? two earned ? six hits and didn't walk or strike out anyone in five innings.

Braves starter Mike Minor (3-6) gave up three homers and allowed seven runs ? four earned ? in 4 2-3 innings.

Adrian Gonzalez added a solo homer for Boston, which won six of seven series against NL opponents.

Heyward is hitting .391 this month with five homers and 12 RBIs.

Cook filled-in for Clay Buchholz, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with what Valentine called a "gastrointestinal issue."

The Red Sox jumped ahead with a four-run fourth against Minor. After breezing through the first three innings allowing just a pair of singles, Minor walked the first two batters in the inning. Ross then homered into the first row of seats above the Green Monster, making it 3-0. One pitch later, Gonzalez sliced a flyball into the Monster seats to make it 4-0.

The Braves capitalized on Cook's throwing error for a run during a three-run fifth. Eric Hinske had a two-run double into the center field triangle after Heyward and Andrelton Simmons singled. Juan Francisco then bounced back to the mound and Cook had Hinske off the bag, but threw widely past third to allow him to score to make it 4-3. Cook retired the next three batters, finishing his work.

In the fifth, Boston scored three unearned runs off Minor when Will Middlebrooks had a sacrifice fly and Ross followed with a two-run homer completely out of Fenway Park over the Monster, making it 7-3. Simmons had a throwing error on Kelly Shoppach's grounder to open the inning when he fired the ball into the Red Sox dugout.

Heyward homered off Matt Albers in the sixth.
