Wake Forest's Wellman tabbed as NCAA committee chair

Athletics director Ron Wellman of Wake Forest will be the chair of the NCAA Division I men?s basketball committee for the 2013-14 season, the NCAA announced Tuesday.

Wellman is finishing his third year on the committee. He?ll serve as vice chair of the committee during the upcoming school year. Xavier athletics director Mike Bobinski will be the chair for 2012-13.

This will be the second time Wellman has served as chair of a Division I committee responsible for selecting teams and seeding them. He held the position of chair of the Division I baseball committee in the past.

Wellman is the longest-serving active athletics director in the Atlantic Coast Conference, taking his position in October 1992. He?s a past chair of the NCAA Division I management council.

Wellman is a Bowling Green graduate and a former baseball coach at Elmhurst and Northwestern. He also was an assistant men?s basketball and assistant football coach at Elmhurst.

Aside from Wellman and Bobinski, the men?s basketball committee for the coming school year also includes LSU athletics director Joe Alleva (the former Duke athletics director); Utah State athletics director Scott Barnes; Oklahoma athletics director Joe Castiglione; Big Sky Conference commissioner Doug Fullerton; Michigan State athletics director Mark Hollis; Conference USA assistant commissioner Judy MacLeod; Delaware athletics director Bernard Muir; and Big West Conference commissioner Jamie Zaninovich.
