Sony PS Vita gains PlayStation Plus compatibility

The Sony PS Vita portable gaming gadget is due for a system software update in the UK from 21 November. The v2.0 software will add compatibility for the PlayStation Plus service.

PlayStation Plus is Sony's subscription based offering that enables gamers to download from a selection of games for no additional cost. Subscribers can choose four titles per month. Additional games will be available to members at discounted prices.

It also includes 1GB of cloud storage for saving game progress and trophy syncing to other PlayStation consoles. Sony announced that PlayStation Plus would be extended to its PS Vita at the 2012 Tokyo Game Show in the summer. The service has been available to PS3 users since 2010. If you are already a PS3 owner with a PlayStation Plus subscription then you will be able to use the service across both devices.

The initial line-up of titles on PlayStation Plus for the PS Vita includes Wipeout 2048, Gravity Rush, Chronovolt and the Nathan Drake game Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

A 12-month subscription to costs ?39.99, similar to Xbox Live Gold, but the free downloads are the main selling point, as online gaming is a free option on the PS Vita already.
