The Danville Area Humane Society is offering a $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the people responsible for abandoning seven 1-week-old puppies in a trash bin Thursday night.
Around 10 p.m. a witness saw two young black males drive up to a Cardinal Village trash bin and dispose of a Purina dog food bag, according to a news release from the Humane Society. The witness said he looked inside the?trash bin and saw four puppies in the bag and three more that had fallen out of the bag.?
The witness told police the male who put the bag in the trash bin was wearing a black hoodie and both men were laughing as they drove away.?
The witness climbed into the trash bin and rescued the puppies. The Danville Police Department was called and quickly responded, according to the release.? The puppies were taken to the shelter, where shelter manager April Hogan bottle-fed the puppies and warmed them up with towels, according to the release.
Humane Society Director Paulette Dean said the puppies have been placed with a nursing mother dog, but there is a possibility foster homes will be needed.? She said the mother dog has accepted them along with her puppies. As of Friday morning, Dean said the puppies were doing well.
If, for some reason, the mother dog starts rejecting the puppies, Dean said foster homes would be necessary. Dean said if the staff finds out the mother dog cannot take care of the puppies, they will post a message on the shelter?s Facebook page stating people can come in and apply to foster the puppies.
State law classifies animal cruelty as a Class 1 misdemeanor, which is punishable by imprisonment in jail for no longer than 12 months and a fine of not more than $2,500.
Anyone with information about this cause is asked to call the Danville Area Humane Society at (434) 799-5306.
