The Ranch?s Renowned Eating Disorder Expert to Address Resistance in Obesity & Binge Eating Disorder Treatment at Professional Workshop

Why is it so difficult for men and women to overcome binge eating disorder and obesity even when they are motivated to do so? This is one of the questions that will be addressed by Carolyn Coker Ross, MD, MPH, a renowned eating disorder and obesity expert and consultant for The Ranch?s eating disorder program, on March 24, 2012, at the annual International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IADEP) Symposium in Charleston.

?In our culture and even in medicine, there continues to be a type of fat phobia,? Dr. Ross said. ?The stigmatization of people who are different sizes and targeting of overweight children with negative messaging only increases the risk of eating disorders and obesity. It?s time to recognize that what we?re doing is not working and take a new approach.?

Titled ?Addressing Therapeutic Roadblocks in Clients with Binge Eating Disorder and Obesity with Integrative Therapies,? the upcoming professional workshop will explore the complex factors contributing to binge eating disorder and obesity, including a research review of the neurobiological causes of these common disorders. Dr. Ross will also address the specific therapeutic roadblocks patients commonly face, as well as integrative therapies to overcome these obstacles. The workshop will conclude with experiential exercises in Zero Balancing, guided imagery, yoga asanas and breathwork.

?A take-away message for clinicians is to stop focusing so heavily on the number on scale,? said Dr. Ross. ?The preponderance of evidence shows that the number on the scale isn?t what causes heart disease, diabetes and other health risks. What matters more for cardiovascular and metabolic fitness is what we eat, how often we move and other lifestyle factors.?

Dr. Ross is an internationally known author, speaker and pioneer in the use of integrative medicine to treat eating disorders, obesity and addictions. Earlier this month, she led an interactive discussion about the way the media affects body image and shapes society?s ideals of beauty at the Binge Eating Disorder Association national conference in Philadelphia. She also spoke at the Ben Franklin Institute Summit for Clinical Excellence in Chicago, addressing integrative medicine approaches to treating patients with eating disorders and trauma.

Next month, Dr. Ross will host a professional workshop about the health benefits of ancestral culture-based diets at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine?s 9th Annual Nutrition & Health Conference in Boston. In addition to ancestral American diets, Dr. Ross will highlight health-promoting aspects of the Paleolithic diet, the Mediterranean diet, and Japanese and Korean diets, among others.

A narrow victory may not be enough for Santorum, who could be under pressure on primary night to quit the race if Romney wins big in other liberal states like New York and Connecticut which hold primaries on the same night as Pennsylvania.

The polls that put Santorum ahead do not make him a strong home-state front-runner compared to his rivals' performances on their home turf.

Romney took an overwhelming 72 percent of the vote in the primary in Massachusetts, where he was governor. Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, running third in national polls, won his home state Georgia with 47 percent.

A Quinnipiac University poll on March 14 showed Santorum with 36 percent support in Pennsylvania. Romney was at 22 percent in the poll but he had trailed early in other large states, including Illinois and Florida, that he went on to win easily.

"So far this primary season, Romney has shown an ability in major states to come back through his own organization, his ties to the party organization and his ability to buy a lot more television time than Santorum can afford," Quinnipiac pollster Peter Brown said.

POPULARITY CONTEST

Santorum has prospered mostly in Republican bastions where evangelical Christians play a big role in party politics, such as Louisiana, where he comfortably won Saturday's primary.

Santorum is expected to do well with such voters in the rural center of Pennsylvania and they could deliver victory if turnout is low in the east and west.

"Pennsylvania voters are very parochial," said Brian Nutt, Santorum's state director. "And what Rick Santorum has proven time and time again his races is he is a tireless campaigner. He understands the values and the issues that are important to Pennsylvania's many regions."

Pam Todd, 74, a Philadelphia artist and member of the fiscally conservative Tea Party, felt strongly the election should be focused on the economy and defeating Obama, not issues like abortion and gay marriage.

"I feel that perhaps Romney is the most electable. I like Rick very, very much. I admire his guts. But he sometimes gets down in the weeds on the social issues," she said.

"You can really get into the social issues and the country could go over a cliff fiscally," Todd said.

One of the state's main Tea Party groups, the influential Independence Hall Tea Party Association PAC, endorsed Romney in the fight to be the Republican who will face President Barack Obama in November.

"There are a fair number of Republicans who are driven by social issues but they aren't as committed to those issues as economic issues in an election cycle like this one," said Alan Novak, a former chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican Party who is backing Romney.

"The election is really first a referendum on the president, unemployment and gas prices," he said.

A good Santorum win would be a moral victory but would not necessarily boost his delegate count. Pennsylvania's primary result does not commit the state's 72 delegates, who are free to vote for anyone they want at the Republican convention.

Leading statewide leaders have not endorsed Santorum, while an array of prominent state Republicans, including the popular former governor, Tom Ridge, support Romney.

Santorum lost his bid for re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2006 by 18 percentage points, among the worst defeats of an incumbent ever. With the unpopular senator trounced at the top of the ticket, Pennsylvania Republicans also lost their majority in the congressional delegation and the state house.

The state party roared back in 2010, winning the governor's mansion and taking back the state house. Santorum's campaign said he was caught in an anti-Republican wave but Republicans have not forgotten 2006.

Obama won Pennsylvania by 11 percentage points in 2008.

"This is not a very mobile state. This is not a state where people are coming in, moving and leaving. They knew Santorum," said Lara Brown, a political scientist at Villanova University near Philadelphia.

"When they are reminded of what they knew about him, he is going to have a difficult time winning the statewide vote."

One of Santorum's problems in his home state is his support for former Senator Arlen Specter, a moderate Republican who became a Democrat in 2009. Santorum backed Specter's 1995 presidential bid and supported him in a 2004 primary fight against Pat Toomey, a conservative who captured Specter's old Senate seat in 2010.

"A lot of people, especially people from where I'm from, associate him with Arlen Specter," said Villanova student Katie Dunn, 19, who grew up in Wexford, near Santorum's hometown in western Pennsylvania and plans to vote for Romney.

"Mitt Romney is overall a better candidate," she said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rick Santorum won the Louisiana Republican presidential primary Saturday, beating front-runner Mitt Romney in yet another conservative Southern state.

"We're still here. We're still fighting. We still believe, as this race really shows," Santorum told supporters in Green Bay, Wis.

Although the victory gives Santorum bragging rights and at least eight more delegates, it does not change the overall dynamics of the race; the former Pennsylvania senator still dramatically lags behind Romney in the hunt for delegates to the GOP's summertime nominating convention.

Even so, Santorum's win underscores a pattern in the drawn-out race.

The under-funded underdog has tended to win in Bible Belt states that include Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama. Romney ? a deep-pocketed, highly organized former Massachusetts governor ? has persistently struggled in such heavily conservative regions.

Early exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks showed that Santorum's win in Louisiana was one of his strongest performances to date among conservatives, working class voters and those calling the economy their top issue. And he continued his dominance among white evangelical voters and those looking for a candidate who shares their religious beliefs. Santorum topped Romney among evangelical voters by more than 2 to 1.

As in previous Southern states, Romney's best showing came among those voters with annual incomes above $100,000 and those who prioritized a candidate's ability to defeat President Barack Obama in November.

The bad economy was the top issue for Louisiana voters. Most were gloomy about prospects for a recovery, saying they felt the economy was getting worse instead of better. While some national surveys suggest Americans are feeling optimistic about economic improvement, just one in eight Republican primary voters said they thought a recovery was under way.

Santorum badly needed a rebound after a decisive Illinois loss to Romney earlier in the week that moved party stalwarts to rally around the front-runner. Many urged Santorum and Gingrich to drop out of the race.

Both refused, and campaigned aggressively in Louisiana in hopes that a victory there would justify them staying in ? despite Republican worries that the long nomination fight could hurt the party's chances against Obama. The Democratic incumbent faces no serious primary challenge and his re-election campaign already is well under way.

Romney barely campaigned in Louisiana, though his allies spent on TV ads there. Instead, Romney was looking past the results and toward the general election.

"I want the vote of the people of Louisiana so we can consolidate our lead," Romney said Friday during a stop in Shreveport. He told supporters his campaign wants to focus on "raising the money and building the team to defeat someone that needs to be out of office in 2012, and that's Barack Obama."

The Louisiana exit poll found that in a hypothetical choice between just the two top contenders, Santorum's lead over Romney tops 20 percentage points, suggesting the former senator would pick up votes from Gingrich's and Paul's current supporters.

Earlier Saturday, Santorum said he wanted to debate Romney without their trailing competitors on stage.

"This race has clearly gotten down to two candidates that can win the nomination," Santorum told reporters in Milwaukee. "I'd love to have a one-on-one debate."
