Movie Review: The Lorax - Multiple Mayhem Mamma

How do we teach our children the importance of caring for our natural environment?


By providing them an engaging, delightful and entertaining story that inspires them to become "greener" in their daily life.


I was recently invited to the Toronto pre-screening of The Lorax by Seventh Generation, a company committed to providing healthy, environmentally safe household products. In partnership with Universal Studios,?Seventh Generation's hope is to bring the crucial message of ecological hope and environmental action to a new generation of children and parents.


The film succeeded in its goal.


?Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." This is the message that is the underlying theme behind the story.


Based on the popular Dr. Seuss book of the same name, the story is about a young boy, Ted (voiced by Zac Efron) who lives in the completely artificial city of "Thneed-Ville." With requited love being his goal, he sets out to win the affections of Audrey (Taylor Swift) who wishes to see a real tree.


In his quest for the tree, he finds out that his city has been shut off from the outside world, and meets Once-ler (Ed Helms) who explains how he met the Lorax (Danny Devito), a strange creature who guards over the land.


The film continues on with memorable lessons about overproduction leading to depletion of natural resources, as well as the importance of nature and our environment. In telling the story, the rich colors, scenery and variety of characters are perfect for keeping any younger viewers engaged and interested. True to Dr. Seuss' original story, the film manages to convey the unique scenery and imaginative landscape that is the hallmark of Dr. Seuss' various books.

The tie-in between The Lorax movie and ecology is very fitting, and well-thought out. Who better to teach the importance of the environment than to our children - our next and future generations who will be the caregivers of our planet? I've written about "Green Parenting" on more than one occasion on this blog and try to do my part in making healthy and ecological choices for my family. To this end, I'm in complete agreement with Seventh Generation's goal of helping people and families make positive differences by making eco-conscious decisions about the types of products that they use.?


We can all do our part - sometimes it's as simple as the shopping choices that we make. As part of the pre-screening, I was provided with a sample of Seventh Generation's 4X Liquid Laundry Detergent which - get this - comes in a 100% post consumer recycled cardboard and newspaper bottle! Talk about walking the walk - you can actually throw the bottle out in your recycling, as it's 100% recyclable, uses 66% less plastic and saves all kinds of things from landfill space to energy to trees. Love it.
If you're like me and interested in moving towards a "greener" lifestyle for your family, Seventh Generation recommends the following tips:

• Set your refrigerator between 2 C and 3 C

• Keep a pitcher and some reusable bottles filled with water in the fridge to help maintain cool temperatures?

• Avoid buying individually wrapped items like prepackaged snacks and drink boxes

• The dishwasher uses the same amount of water whether it?s full or not, so only turn it on only when it?s full

• Wash in cold water ? 90% of the energy used while doing laundry goes towards heating the water

• Use a biodegradable detergent

• Unplug your computer, printer, DVD player, TV, coffee maker, and cell phone charger when you aren?t using them ? these devises use up power even when they?re turned off!

• Sign up for paperless billing

• Host or join an event like cleaning up garbage in your neighbourhood, planting trees, or starting a community garden.?
